Hattie Brown was born Oct. 27, 1853, in Coshocton county, Ohio, aged 59 years and 7 months. At the age of 14 years, she with her parents, moved to Bureau county, Illinois. She was united in marriage with Mr. George W. Smith (deceased) Aug. 29, 1875, and they were among the early settlers of Madison county.

Mrs. Smith was converted soon after her marriage and identified herself with the church and has lived a true devoted Christian life until the end. In the year 1877 she, with her husband, united with the U. B. church at Union Chapel Class, Van Meter circuit, under the pastorial labors of Rev. G. J. Graham, her membership was afterwards transferred to the Jefferson class.

She was devoted to her home and family. With the exception of one year which was spent in Illinois, they lived at the one place during their married life, at their home in Jefferson township, Madison county, Iowa, where they built a lovely and convenient home, but did not enjoy it very long. After the death of her husband she went to Winterset and purchased a comfortable home where she might spend the balance of her days. Shortly after moving here she became afflicted, and for more than nine months she suffered very much, but all without a murmur. She endured it patiently until the end.

Two children were born to this union Sankey J. and Mrs. Lottie Smith. Both were in attendance at the funeral service. Also four grandchildren, besides two sisters, Mrs. I. N. Norman, of Van Meter, Ia., and Mrs. Elizabeth Boyd, of Coshocton county, Ohio, and a very large circle of friends.

The funeral services were held in the Jefferson U. B. church on Thursday afternoon conducted by the Rev. D. W. Swender, the pastor, and interment was made in the cemetery at the church by the side of her husband.

Note: Burial was made in the Jefferson-Goar cemetery.
