Anna Jane Farquhar was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, March 20, 1830 and departed this life July 7, 1912, at her home in Jackson township, Madison county, aged 82 years, 2 months and 17 days. At the age of 20, she united with the Presbyterian church, of which she was a life-long member, living her religion by a life of daily faith and works. In the year 1858, she was united in marriage with Henry Given who died July 2, 1893. Nine children were born to bless this union of whom seven remain to mourn the loss of a devoted, Godly mother. They are John, a merchant in Creston; Robert of Macksburg; William, who lives 12 miles west of Winterset; Erwin, who has lived with and ministered to his aged mother in her declining years; Mrs. Maggie Kivett of Macksburg, Mrs. Anna Handley of Kasson and Mrs. Emma Handley of Lorimor. There are also a score or more of grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The pall bearers at the funeral were six grandsons, Elmer, Eugene and Lee Kivett, Lewis and Lloyd Given and Raymond Handley.

Mrs. Given came to America with her husband in the year 1868, to Iowa living 15 years in Wayne county, the remaining 29 years in Madison county, 16 years at her late residence.

Mrs. Given was devoted to her children and grand children, anxious to live and do for them, yet resigned to the Lord’s will and ready to go when her time came, having the blessed hope of eternal life. For two years she had been in failing health, but her sickness dates from last Christmas and for five months, she was confined to her bed, a patient sufferer.

The funeral service was held at Wesley Chapel, conducted by Rev. Wilburn of -------- and the interment was made in the Kivett cemetery.
