Leona J. Kirkland, 90, of Macksburg died Sept. 2, 2010, at the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg with Pastor Sandra Smith officiating. Burial was at Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg. Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Methodist Church in Macksburg. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
Leona Kirkland was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Bushnell, Ill., to Johnson and Viva (Leach) McDonald. She was a 1937 graduate of Afton High School and later received her teaching certificate from Iowa State. Leona taught country school in Union County for one year before marrying Ralph “Bussy” Kirkland on Nov. 5, 1938, in Maryville, Mo. Leona, a homemaker, was a member of the Macksburg United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s Society, Hawthorne Rebekah Lodge, WRC, Red Hat Society, and Farm Bureau.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Warren Kirkland; six brothers — Francis, LeRoy, LaVern, J.R., Forrest, and Marion; a sister, Eleanor; and a granddaughter, Brenda Kirkland Smith.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Kirkland of Lorimor and Ronald Kirkland of Macksburg; two sisters, Ruby Dibel and Bonnie Pulliam, both of Creston; one brother, Dale McDonald of Creston; and eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
