Z. S. Read, one of the early settlers of this community and a veteran of the 1st Iowa Cavalry in the war of the rebellion, was stricken with apoplexy on Monday night, and died at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Mr. Read, who was a carpenter by trade, was working on a building on the old Sulgrove farm in Douglas township, when stricken Monday night. A physician was summoned and on Tuesday morning he was removed to his home in Winterset.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 today at the Methodist church and burial in the Winterset cemetery.

Surviving members of the family are his widow, four sons John C., of Silver Creek, Nebr., Fred A., of Monroe, Nebr., Archibald E. of Des Moines and Chas E. of Grand Junction, Colo., and five daughters: Mrs. G. A. Bardrick, Mrs. Laverna Garrettson and Miss Myrtle of Winterset and Mrs. D. D. Young and Mrs. S. W. Richardson of Los Angeles, Calif. Two brothers, Ezra Read of Topeka, Kansas and Thomas of Winterset and one sister, Mrs. Anne Belles of Pawnee, Nebr., are in attendance at the burial services.
