Caroline Garrettson, daughter of Nathan and Amelia G. Garrettson, was born in Ohio, Nov. 17th, 1838 and died Oct. 18, 1911, at the home of her son, Dr. E. C. Sturman of Hartford, Iowa, at the age of 72 years 11 months and one day. She came to Winterset in her early childhood.

She was married to Thos. Sturman, July 7, 1869. To this union were born eight children, two of whom passed on before in infancy. Her husband passed away March 26, 1880. The children living are: Mrs. J. W. Forney of Olton, Texas, Clarence of Goldfield, Nevada; Mrs. G. S. Trimble and Mrs. G. W. Barr of West Hope, N. D.; Dr. E. C. Sturman of Hartford and Mrs. C. O. Freel of Murray. She was a faithful, loving wife and a loving mother, one of those devoted Christians whose walk in life expressed love, tenderness, gentleness, goodness, kindness and purity and was in blissful accord with her God.

For eight years she had been an invalid. Never, through all her suffering did a word of complaint pass her lips for the world knows not of the peace that comes to the soul at one with God. Crossing the waters at His side, led by His hand so true, she whispered low “It is not death, but life, if they only knew.”

Mrs. Caroline Sturman, who was one of the pioneers of this county, died at the home of her son, Dr. Eldon Sturman at Hartford, Warren county, yesterday morning. The body was brought here this morning and funeral services were held at the Challen Danforth home at 3 o’clock.

Since moving from the old homestead in Union township, Mrs. Sturman made her home with her children. Surviving members of her family are: Eldon, residing at Hartford, Iowa, Mrs. Mae Freel of Murray, Mrs. Leota Forney of Olton, Texas, Mrs. Laura Trimble and Mrs. Cora Barr, who reside at West Hope, N. D., also Clarence of Goldfield, Nevada.
