THOMAS J. SMITH - Killed by Switch Engine

Word was received here Sunday of the death of Thos. J. Smith at Chamberlain, S.D. Mr. Smith moved from here to Weta, S.D.; about five years ago, where he had a claim. He in company with his wife and a son, came back some time ago, in hopes that the change would be of benefit to the child, who was in poor health. He started for his home on last Friday and was killed by a switch engine at Chamberlain.

Mr. Smith was the father of Mrs. Roy Storrs and Bert Smith of Winterset and Mrs. Jerry Reeder of Lincoln township. The remains were brought here for burial, and services conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis, were held at the First Christian church this morning and interment in Rock City cemetery.

THOMAS JOSEPH SMITH

Thomas Joseph Smith was born in Aroe county, Ky., March 14, 1854, departed this life Oct. 25, 1914, being 60 years, 9 months and 25 days of age. Two sisters, Laura and Mary preceded him to the other world. Three brothers, John, George and Nathaniel are left to mourn his death.

He was married to Miss Minerva Ruttie, Jan. 15, 1877. To this union were born nine children, Elizabeth, Homer, Bert, Lottie, Mary, Etna, Elsie, Jay and Alma, all of whom except the last, are left to mourn his death. He was a kind and loving husband and father, respected and loved by all who knew him.
