Page 4Sudden Death of Mrs. Norris
Mrs. Caroline Norris, wife of the late John Norris, who was one of the old settlers of the county, died at her home in the south part of town last Friday morning. Mrs. Norris had suffered from heart trouble for the past two or three years and had been warned by her physician not to allow herself to be left alone in the house. She had three roomers in the house but they left early in the morning and the first did not return until soon after four o’clock in the afternoon when her lifeless body was found in the sitting room where she had fallen from a chair. The precise time of her death is not known as there was nobody else in the house from early morning until she was found.
Mrs. Norris was a lady of considerable means and lived alone in her handsome home save the three roomers. She was a lady of high education and attainments and beloved by all who knew her. Her maiden name was McCarty and she was born in Chemung county, N. Y., Aug. 18, 1843. She was married to John Norris at Millport, N. Y., Oct. 4, 1876, and came directly to Winterset, which place has been her home ever since.
She is survived by four sisters and one brother, now living in the east. Also Chas. Humphrey, a nephew, of Pierre, S. Dak., and Mrs. Wm. Steel, of Algona, Ia. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Eugene ReQua, of the M.E. church, of which church she had been a life long member, Monday afternoon, and on Tuesday morning the remains, accompanied by Mr. Humphrey, were taken to Elmira, N.Y., where they will be interred by the side of her husband, who died May 29, 1903.

Page 1Mrs. John Norris Dies Suddenly
Mrs. John Norris died suddenly on last Friday evening at her home two blocks south of the square. Nelson Bertholf, a roomer at the Norris home, found his rooms uncared for upon returning from work at about five o’clock in the evening. He suspected that Mrs. Norris might not be well and upon entering the dining room of Mrs. Norris’ apartments discovered her lying on the floor of the dining room, where she had been stricken with paralysis while doing the morning work. She had been unconscious from the first and expired about a half hour later without regaining consciousness. While her death was a distinct shock to many it was known to her intimate friends that she had had symptoms of paralysis for about a year.
Mrs. Norris, whose maiden name was Caroline McCarty, was born in Chemung county, New York, August 19, 1843. She was married to John Norris at Millsport, N. Y. October 4, 1876, moving to this county the same year.
She is survived by a niece and nephew, Mrs. W. C. Steele of Algona, Iowa and Chas. Humphrey of Pierre, South Dakota, and four sisters and one brother, all of whom live in the east.
Funeral services were held at the late home on Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. W. ReQua, and her nephew accompanied her remains to the family home in New York for burial.
Mrs. Norris was a splendid type of American womanhood, a woman of unusual intellect and refinement who wielded a decided influence for the best. She will be especially missed in church and club work to which she was devoted.
