Death of George Duff

George Duff whose illness has been of long duration and attended by great suffering, passed away early Wednesday morning at the family home on West Washington street. He was one of the earlier settlers of this county, and had a wide acquaintance throughout Madison County. The family moved to Winterset from Madison township about twenty years ago. He was identified with public affairs as mayor of Winterset, member of the school board and for several years was engaged in the mercantile business in the building now occupied by Tarleton & Darrah’s clothing store. Mrs. Duff and one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Phelps of Steele, S.D., survive him. One son, Ellbridge, and one daughter, Grace, having preceded him to the better world. EX-MAYOR GEORGE DUFF DIES TUESDAY MORNING

Ex-mayor George Duff died at his home on South Fourth street Tuesday morning. His death was not unexpected. The funeral will be held from the residence Friday afternoon.

George Duff was one of the county's oldest citizens and successful farmers. He bought his farm in Madison township in 1860 from Lindsay Mullinux. Mr. Duff was married in the late sixties to Miss Sarah Hudson, a sister of T.J. Hudson. As a young man he worked in Colorado mining camps and made his start there. After moving to Winterset in from his farm in 1892 he engaged in the mercantile business. He served two terms as mayor of Winterset, being elected on the democratic ticket. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church and was one of its staunchest supporters.

Mr. Duff is survived by his wife and a daughter, Mrs. Rees Phelps, of Steele, South Dakota; two brothers, Eber and William Duff, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Bennett. He was one of Winterset's foremost citizens and his death caused profound sorrow in both city and county.

George Duff, one of the prominent citizens of this place, died at his home Wednesday, February 22d, at 3 o'clock a.m., after a long and painful illness extending over a period of a year or more. He had been a sufferer for some time, and had underwent two or three operations in the hope of regaining his health, but it seems no permanent relief was obtained, and he gradually failed while for the past week his death was hourly expected.

He was sixty-nine years of age, and came to Madison county in 1858. He located on a farm in Madison township, where for many years he was known as one of our best citizens and most prosperous farmers.

Twenty years ago he moved to Winterset, and engaged in the grocery business, in which he continued until 1904 when he retired from active business. He was twice elected mayor of Winterset, in which capacity he served most acceptably.

In 1871 he was married to Miss Sarah J. Hudson. To them were born three children, one son and one daughter of whom died in 1904 and 1907 respectively. He came from a large family, consisting of three brothers and seven sisters; of these, two brothers and three sisters, besides his wife and one daughter, survive him.

He was a general favorite with all who knew him. His genial and sunny disposition made him friends wherever he went. The community mourns his loss.

The funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow (Friday) afternoon conducted by the deceased's pastor, Rev. Dugan, of the United Presbyterian church, after which the remains will be interred in the city cemetery.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
