Alex Ruth Dies Suddenly

Alex Ruth, of this place, died very suddenly at about 6:30 Saturday evening, January 28th. On Friday, he was down town, though complaining of a slight attack of the grip. On Saturday, he was able to be up and about the premises. After partaking of a light lunch in the evening, he laid down on a couch saying that he would retire early. A few minutes later, he was heard to gasp for breath and when Mrs. Ruth reached his side, he was breathing his last. Although advanced in years, he had been enjoying unusually good health for one of his years and the news of his death was a profound shock to his many friends at this place.

Mr. Ruth was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1836. He was married in Johnson county, Iowa, to Sarah J. Funk in 1866. To them were born six children, four of whom survive the father. They are C. E. Ruth of Ponce, Puerto Rico; Dr. O. J. Ruth of Paloma, Illinois, Mrs. Carrie B. Mark, of Rapid City, S.D.; and Lizzie of near Glendive, Montana. Of his children, only one son, Oliver was able to attend the funeral. We went to the front during the Rebellion and after its close was honorably discharged from the 7th Iowa Cavalry. His wife died in 1896 and on Oct. 6, 1897, he was again married to Harriet McDonald Clark, who with one daughter, Marie, survive him.

Funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. A. Walburn and Rev. T. N. Dugan, and the body taken to the former home in Johnson county for burial.
