ALBERT VON RENTZELL, EARLHAM

Albert “Dean” von Rentzell, 74, of Earlham, died Saturday, June 27, 2010.

Services were held today (Wednesday, June 30) at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Dean von Rentzell was born September 21, 1935, to Lucy Mae (Coffman) and Albert Herman von Rentzell in Clearfield, Iowa. Dean graduated from Earlham Community School in 1955. On June 7, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joyce Perry of Greenfield. To this union 3 sons were born.

Dean was a PFC of the Iowa National Guard. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard in 1962. Dean was a heavy equipment operator for Concrete Materials and retired from Harris & Sons Construction in 2001. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Jean, Joan and Dennett, and two brothers: Dennis and Dale.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of Earlham; three sons, Tom von Rentzell of Earlham, Dave von Rentzell of Van Meter and Terry von Rentzell of Earlham; two aunts, a sister-in-law, 6 granddaughters and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

ALBERT "DEAN" VON RENTZELL, Earlham

Albert "Dean" von Rentzell, age 74, died at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines on Sunday June 27, 2010.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial in the Earlham Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday June 29, 2010 at the Kuhn Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dean worked as a heavy equipment operator for Concrete Materials and retired from Harris & Sons Construction in 2001.

Dean is survived by his wife Joyce of Earlham; sons: Tom (Donna) of Earlham; Dave (Pam) of Van Meter; Terry of Earlham; 6 granddaughters: Kayleigh, Taylor, McKaila, McKenna, Mckenzie and Shelby: sister-in-law Jo von Rentzel of Lincoln, NE; aunts: Mary Carr and Janet Coffman; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be directed to the Earlham Rescue.

Dean was well known for saying “don’t throw it away, I can fix it”! And he usually did. Dean loved to take anything mechanical apart and try to put it back together. Dean was a stubborn man, but a good man. He found great joy in agitating his wife. Dean was an avid CB radio enthusiast, known as “Dirt Pusher”. Some of the joys in his life were cutting and burning wood, coffee, peanut butter, peppermint candies and his cats.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents three sisters Jean, Joan and Dennett, and two brothers Dennis and Dale.

Dean is survived by his wife Joyce of Earlham; son Tom (Donna) of Earlham son Dave (Pam) of Van Meter, and son Terry of Earlham; six granddaughters: Kayleigh, Taylor, McKaila, McKenna, McKenzie and Shelby; sister-in-law Jo von Rentzell of Lincoln, NE and Karen (Gene) Schleiffarth of Earlham; aunts Mary Carr and Janet Coffman, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held June 30 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham. Ernest Baiotto officiated. Special music was “Daddy’s Hands” by Holly Dunn, “Go Rest High On That Mountain” by Vince Gill and “Beyond The Sunset” by Hank Williams. Pallbearers were Dale von Rentzell, Dan von Rentzell, Butch von Rentzell, Dean Lane, Mark Swan and Howard Coffman. Honorary pallbearers were Errol Heckman, Jim Hannus, Jack Johns, Jim Carey, Donna Carey, Amy Marshall, Melissa (Schleiffarth) Dory, Gene Schleiffarth, Lance von Rentzell, Rusty Carey and Pam Swan. Interment was at Earlham Cemetery in Earlham.
