VERN "SANDY" H. AHNEN, Earlham

Vern "Sandy" Ahnen, age 93, died at Madison Co. Memorial Hospital in Winterset on June 13, 2010.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday June 17, 2010 at Early Chapel Church in rural Earlham with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday June 16, 2010 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

Sandy is survived by his wife Evelyne of Earlham; daughter Sandy Kristufek of West Des Moines; son Ron Ahnen of Des Moines; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Vern “Sandy” Ahnen was born the son of George and Eva (Schad) Ahnen near Fontanelle, Iowa on December 3, 1916 and died at the Madison County Memorial Hospital on June 13, 2010 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 10 days.

Sandy received his education in the Nevinville, Iowa School. He always had a love for baseball and played as a catcher in his grade school years. He also played catcher for the town leagues in Stuart and Earlham. Sandy farmed in the early years as a farm hand using horses. Sandy and Lorene Clark were married April 13, 1938 in Olathe, Colorado. This union was blessed with two children, Sandra and Ron. Lorene died April 10, 1982. Sandy worked for a few years in Colorado for an electric company installing high-line wires. He came back to Iowa to farm near Spalding, Greenfeld, Pitzer and Earlham, farming for a total of 69 years. Sandy and Evelyne Whited were married February 15, 1986. Sandy loved to play cards, especially pitch and solitaire. He was an avid reader of western novels. Sandy was a member of the Early Chapel Church and a Deacon Emeritus. He once managed the church farm and was very involved with the care of the church building. He loved to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Sandy is survived by his wife Evelyne Ahnen of Earlham; daughter Sandra Kristufek of West Des Moines; son Ron Ahnen of Des Moines; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Sandy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorene, brothers Glen, Lloyd and Rex, sisters Ruby Jensen and Gladys Hoakinson.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 17 at Early Chapel Church in rural Earlham. Pastor Neal Hanley officiated. Tracy Faust was the organist. Congregational hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Home On The Range”. Soloist Neal Hanley sang “Amazing Grace”. Pallbearers were Daryl Scar, Dwayne Scar, Paul Marston, Morris Smith, Brian Beener and Jason Kristufek. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Leeper, Melvin Jensen and Alden “Red” Lorimor. Interment was at Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield.
