MRS. EMILY THORNBRUGH Dies

Mrs. Emily Thornbrugh, 80, former Winterset resident, died early Tuesday morning in Des Moines from a heart attack. Services will be in Winterset Friday afternoon at the Tidrick funeral home.

She was the daughter of Henry Evans and the widow of J. C. Thornbrugh who died about fourteen years ago. Her sisters, Mrs. Laura Cridling of Winterset and Mrs. Mary Osborn of Pomeroy, and a brother, John Evans of Macksburg, are the only ones surviving of her immediate family.

MADISON PIONEER DIES IN DES MOINES

Mrs. Thornbrugh Member of Two Old Families. Services Friday.

Services for Mrs. Emma A. Thornbrugh, 80, who died October 15 at her home in Des Moines, were held here Friday at the Tidrick funeral home, burial was in the Winterset cemetery. Mrs. Thornbrugh had been in apparent normal health and her sudden death was attributed to a heart attack.

Mrs. Thornbrugh by birth and marriage was a member of two pioneer families that were well known in the early days of the settlement of the county. Her father built the old stone house that yet stands on the road east of Buffalo school. Mr. Thornbrugh’s father was one of the oldest settlers of Scott township and assisted in laying out Winterset. Both families lived near Buffalo mill which figured prominently in the early history of the county.

She was the oldest daughter of Henry and Mary Evans and was born at Topeka, Kansas, September 29, 1855. When she was about five family moved to Madison county where most of her life was spent. Her marriage to James Cass Thornbrugh took place March 25, 1875. Mr. Thornbrugh died in July 1922.

Of their nine children, seven survive, Lester and Lloyd Thornbrugh of Denver, Colorado; Alvin Thornbrugh of Goodland, Kansas; Mrs. Mabel Eynon of Jackson, Wyoming; Mrs. Iva Cook, Mrs. Ina Wilcox and Mrs. Grace Fetters of Des Moines; Arthur and Elizabeth are deceased. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Laura Cridling of Winterset; Mrs. Mary Osborn of Pomeroy; and Mrs. Rowina Peacock of Los Angeles, California; and 2 brothers, John Evans of Macksburg and Ed Evans of Winterset.
