Jas. Henry Miller was born in Morgan county, Illinois, May 3, 1833. He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1852, and settled in Marion county. He was married to Martha Jane Litter Oct. 14, 1854. To them four children were born, one son and three daughters all of whom survive him but were left motherless June 12, 1868. In October 1876, he was again married to Mary E. Willard. To this union six children were born two sons and four daughters. The youngest girl died in infancy, the second died in 1903 at the age of 28.
In 1875, Mr. Miller removed to Madison county and located on a farm two miles southeast of Peru. On June 4, 1899, he was again called upon to mourn the loss of his companion and after a lapse of three years he was united in marriage to Maggie A. Adams of Durham, Iowa, where he resided until called by death Nov. 3, 1910. His last illness attended by great suffering dates from March of this year. He bore his suffering with Christian fortitude and died in the faith which guided his life. With the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Kate Zimmerman of Portland, Oregon, all of his children were permitted to visit him during his last sickness.
The funeral services were held at East Peru on November 6th, Rev. S. C. Howe, assisted by C. K. Corkill, having charge of the services. Burial was at the Ebeneezer cemetery under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. order.
