Obituary

Jacob Gutshall was born in ___________ county, Pennsylvania, May 27, 1815, and died at his home near Booneville, Iowa, Nov. 3, 1910, aged 95 years, 5 months and 6 days. While a boy, he moved with the family to Harrison county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood on a farm, and later was in the mercantile business for a number of years. In this he was quite successful. About this time, the west was much talked of, and many hearts were turned this way. Mr. Gutshall was among the number who desired to investigate the new country. Hence he made a trip to Iowa in 1852 and purchased a large tract of land. He again visited Iowa in 1854 and in the following year, moved his family to Dallas county, where he resided until the close of his life. He was twice married. His first wife was Ruth Mathias who lived but a few years. Later, he married Mahala Snyder, who shared with him the experiences of life for many years, passing away in the autumn of 1906. The first marriage was blessed with one child, who died in infancy. Of the second marriage, six children were born, four of whom are living—two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Shambaugh and Mrs. Ruth Grabill; two sons, Harry and George. There are also nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In 1857 he became a Christian, being a charter member of the Union Chapel class. Truly, he was a pillar of the church, holding official relationship almost continuously. The college, the seminary, and other general interest of the church were appreciated and strongly supported by Father Gutshall. In all his living, he was modest and unassuming. To be praised of men was not to his liking. His robust physique, vigorous intellect and force were so mingled with gentleness as to make him truly great. He lived to an exceptional age and often spoke of the goodness of God inspiring him so long. The summons found him ready, even anxious, to be with his Savior and loved ones.

Note: Burial was made in the Union Chapel-Jefferson Township cemetery.
