Matthew Vaughn, for many years a resident of Douglas township, died on Sunday night at his home five miles northwest of Winterset. He was ill only a week with pneumonia.

Funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church in this city on Wednesday and burial made at Stringtown cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one son, Wilson, and on daughter, Mrs. John McNamara, all living in this county.

Obituary

Matthew Crew Vaughan was born in Morgan county, Ohio, October 22, 1836, and died at his home in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, on December 12, 1910.

On April 5, 1863, he was married to Elizabeth Rogan, who was born in Scotland, October 16, 1844. To this union was born three children, Mary Agnes, James William and Matthew Wilson. James died in 1904.

Mr. Vaughan belonged to a family of thirteen, only two survive him, Andrew Vaughan, of Guthrie Center, and Mrs. Catherine Ripley, of Ohio.

The deceased came to Madison county in 1859 and has been a resident here ever since. He is survived by his wife and two children above noted.

Obituary

Matthew C. Vaughn was born in Morgan county, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1846. On April 5, 1863 he was married to Elizabeth Rogan who was born in Creetown, Scotland. This union was blessed with three children, Mary Agnes, now Mrs. John McNamara, Wilson and James. The latter departed this life Sept. 6, 1904. Of a family of thirteen, one brother, Andrew Vaughn of Guthrie Center and Catherine Ripley of Macksburg, Ohio, survive.

The deceased was an early settler of Madison county, coming here in 1859, and continuing his residence here until called by death, December 6th, after a week’s illness with pneumonia. He was universally respected as an upright citizen, a kind neighbor and an indulgent parent.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s church in Winterset conducted by Rev. Father Troy, and burial at Stringtown.
