John Leddy, one of the pioneer settlers of this county, for a number of years a resident of Douglas township, died Sunday at his home in Stuart. Mr. Leddy will be remembered by many of the old settlers.

Obituary -
John Leddy who had been a resident of Stuart about 15 years died Sunday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Stricken Friday morning with paralysis from which he never recovered.

He was the eldest son of Patrick and Letitia Leddy, born in County Caren, Ireland in 1835.

With his parents he moved to Covington, Kentucky in 1841 and then to Madison County, Iowa in 1855 where he resided with his parent on their farm.

He married Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of Jacob and Susan Bennett and settled on a farm near Ashland, Nebraska. Two children were born to this union, Etta, who survives and Letitia who died in infancy.

In 1878 they moved to Madison County, Iowa, where they resided until about 15 years ago. Since then living in Stuart.

Surviving are his wife, and daughter Ella Leddy of Stuart, a sister, Mary A. Malone of Stuart, brothers, William Leddy of Ashland, Neb. and Alexander Leddy of Amity, Missouri.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 23 at the home and interment at Simcock Cemetery.

P. Conway, of Atlantic, Mrs. Josiah Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shaffer and sons, of Winterset, W. V. and M. A. and Mary E. Bennett, of Winterset, Joseph Call and wife of Winterset, M. E. McCazthy and wife, of Casey, Mrs. Mary Walters and son of Casey.

Former Madison County Citizen Dies of Paralysis

John Leddy who had been a resident of Stuart about 15 years died Sunday Aug. 21 at 6 o’clock p. m. He was stricken Friday morning with paralysis from which he never recovered.

Deceased was the eldest son of Patrick and Letitia Leddy. He was born in County Caven, Ireland in 1835 in with his parents removed to Covington, Ky., in 1841, and then again to Madison Co., Iowa in 1855, where he resided with his parents on a farm. He then went to Neb. where he freighted between Plattsmouth, Neb., and Denver, Colo., for about two years.

He was married to Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of Jacob and Susan Bennett and settled on a farm near Ashland, Neb. to this happy union two children were born, Etta, who survives him, and Letitia who died in infancy. In 1878 they removed to Madison Co., Iowa, where they resided until about fifteen years ago. Since which time he had lived in Stuart until his death.

He was one of Iowa’s early settlers and endured the hardships and struggles of pioneer life. There were no railroads and towns when he traveled across the plains, their only equipage being a team of oxen and a prairie schooner and the trading station at Fort Des Moines.

He was an honest, industrious man in leaves his family well provided for. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Etty Leddy of Stuart, his sister, Mary A. Malone, of Stuart, his brothers, William Leddy of Ashland, Neb., and Alexander Leddy of Amity, Mo.

The funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 23 at his home and the interment was made in the Simcoke cemetery. Those present from out of town where William Leddy and son of Ashland, Neb.; Alexander Leddy of (missing text) and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Malone of Amity, Mo,; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Malone, Adair; Mr. Mrs. M. P. Conway of Atlantic, Mrs. Josiah Bennett, Mr. Andrew Shaffer and sons of Winterset; W. V., M. A. And Mary E. Bennett of Winterset; Joseph call and wife of Winterset; M. E. McCarthy and wife of Casey; Mrs. Mary Walters and son of Casey.
