Death of S. O. Banker

S. O. Banker, one of the prominent businessmen of Winterset, died at his home in this city last Monday, after a long illness. Mr. Banker had suffered from a severe spell of sickness early in the winter from which he got up and was able to attend to business for a short time, but very soon he was again taken ill from which he never recovered. He was a veteran of the civil war and an active member of Pitzer Post G.A.R. His old comrades in arms mourn him as a good soldier, exemplary citizen and for his patriotism and loyalty to his county and his fidelity to his neighbors and friends.

The funeral services were held in the Baptist church, of which he was an active and devoted member, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. M. Atwood and the remains were interred in the Rock City cemetery.

S. O. Banker was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, Dec. 25, 1843 and died in Winterset, April 11, 1910. He enlisted February 24, 1864 and was honorably discharged from the service at the close of the rebellion. He served as Corporal of his Company under Capt. Hugh Hick Siverds and at his death was a member of Pitzer Post G.A.R.

He was married to Miss Jennie Barger Oct. 3, 1866. To this union were born four children, two boys and two girls. Mr. Banker moved with his family to Madison county, Iowa, in the fall of 1880, leaving his farm for a residence in Winterset where they have resided since the spring of 1901.
