A. O. Caudle Commits Suicide

Early Monday morning A. O. Caudle, living about 6 miles north of town shot and killed himself. The body was found in a corn crib. He committed the deed with a 22 rifle by shooting himself in the right temple. We understand that he had been in poor health for some time and at times acted queerly.

On Jan. 12th he was taken before the insane commission, and after a careful examination of himself and a number of witnesses, among whom were a number of our prominent business men, he was pronounced sane.

Mr. Caudle has lived in the county about eight years and had made many friends, who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. The funeral occurred Wednesday and interment took place in the Rock City cemetery.

Aaron Owen Caudle was born March 14th, 1862, near Booneville, North Carolina, and died on his farm north of Winterset, Iowa, on Sunday night, April 10th, 1910, aged 48 years, and 20 days. His parents were Abraham and Margaret Caudle and beside the departed the following are their children: A. R. Caudle, John H. of Ellsworth, Iowa, Mrs. Geo. L. Foster of Winterset, Iowa, Jamess J. Caudle of Ellsworth, Iowa, and William S. Caudle of Earlham, Iowa.

The deceased, Aaron O. Caudle, was married to Miss Johanna Pehrson at Ellsworth, Iowa, on November 13th, 1883, and to them were born Eugene F., Leslie R., Myron C., all of whom are at home, and an adopted daughter, Gertrude F. These, with the stricken widow, remain in the home.

Mr. Caudle moved with his parents from North Carolina about 1866 and came to Hardin county, Iowa, where they lived for ten years and then settled at Elsworth. In 1901 the deceased bought the farm north of Winterset where he resided till death claimed him. Farming was his life long occupation. About twenty years ago he joined the Congregational church, Lincoln township, Hamilton county, Iowa. He was a good citizen and neighbor of temperant habits and honest in his dealings.

He has been failing more than a year and for months has had frequent attacks of serious spinal trouble which would leave him nervous and despondent.

The funeral services were held at his late residence Wednesday at 10:00 o’clock. Rev. A. E. Foutch of DeSoto preached from the text of John 16:33 Theme “How to Meet Trouble.”

The body was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
