A. J. Berkey died at his home last Thursday after a long illness. He had lived in this community since 1900 and was past 86 years of age.

Alvine Jerome Berkey, son of John and Mary Berkey was born April 15, 1865 in Wayne county, Ohio. At an early age he moved with his parents to Scott county, Iowa, near Davenport. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Nellie Hodge.

In 1900 he with his wife moved to Fairview where they lived for 19 years. They then moved to Earlham where they lived until the death of his companion on August 10, 1924. In 1930 he was married in Omaha, Nebraska to Malinda Madren who has been his faithful companion until his passing September 18, 1941, at the age of 86 years, five months and three days.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Emeline Jewett of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Lizzie Berckham of California, and a brother, Jim Berkey aged 94 years of Spokane, Washington, besides nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Mr. Berkey was a life-time member of the Presbyterian church. He was always found in his place, giving consistently of his time and talents to the work of his Lord. Only the last few years was he denied the privilege of attending the services he loved.

He was loved by his friends and neighbors, and will be greatly missed from the town and community. He has gone to join that immortal host.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the pastor Rev. S. M. Overholser assisted by the Rev. Peter Bock. Burial in the Earlham cemetery.
