The deceased was born in Wayne county, Ohio, March 5, 1843. He moved to Des Moines in the autumn of 1865 and to Patterson in 1871. He was married October 22, 1865 to Miss Cecelia Caroline Smith. To them were born five children, Ettie, Clara, Jessie, Olive and Ernie. Three of the children preceded the father, Etta at 34 years, Clara at 11 months and Jessie at 26 years. He leaves a wife, a son and a daughter and eight grandchildren.

On March 10, 1862 he enlisted in company G. 10th Iowa for three years. During that fall he was discharged on account of broken health, and has ever since lived in Crawford township. He was a consistent member of the Methodist church, of which he was trustee for many years.

The funeral took place on Sunday, April 3d in the afternoon and was conducted in part by the G.A.R. Post of this city, about twenty members being present.
