GERALD A. KIRSCHER, Winterset

Gerald A. Kirscher, 65, of Winterset died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at his home.

A visitation was held Friday, April 30, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 1, at the funeral home. Burial was at Booneville Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Gerald’s name will be designated at a later date.

Gerald Allen Kirscher, the third child of Elmer Charles and Phyllis Larena (McNair) Kirscher, was born March 11, 1945, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm, along with his siblings, Bernice and Robert, near Earlham, Iowa.

In 1963 Gerald graduated from Earlham High School, and shortly thereafter joined the Air National Guard. Here he served his country faithfully, achieving the rank of Airman Third Class. While in the National Guard, he completed his education in air conditioning and refrigeration at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.

Gerald worked for Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines as an air conditioning and refrigeration engineer. This is where he met Virginia Stonehocker, and later married her on April 4, 1970, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Monica and Brian, and they made their home in Carlisle and DeSoto. Gerald and Virginia later parted ways and he moved to Winterset where he worked at Northward Plaza for many years.

Gerald enjoyed tinkering and being a handyman for his daughter, Monica. He also liked taking motorcycle trips and working on his cars and trucks.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Monica Fizer (friend, Harland Belcher); a son, Brian Kirscher (wife Barbi); his grandchildren — Kruse, Wesley, Kegan, Jessica, and Greg (wife Stacy); a great-grandson, Gavin; special friends, Virginia and Keith Hawkins; and a host of relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Bernice Baird in 1978; brother, Robert in 2001; son-in-law, Shane Fizer in 2004; and a grandson, Joshua Cook.
