Friday, June 1, 2001Timothy Joseph Schantz, 36, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Dubuque, died of an apparent heart attack Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Nome, Alaska.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Presbyterian Church, Winterset, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare, Winterset, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and there will be a sharing of memories service at 7 p.m.
He was born on Oct. 30, 1964, in Rock Island, Ill., son of Dean and Kathryn "Kit" (Kearney) Schantz. Tim never married.
He graduated from Colfax High School and Simpson College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree with a major in environmental science. He worked with the Wilderness Birding Adventures in Alaska. He also worked in the summer for the state of Alaska with the Department of Fish and Game and in the winter with the rural Alaska Community Action Program.
Surviving are his parents, Dean and Kathryn Schantz, of Winterset, formerly of Dubuque; two brothers, Michael (Terri) Schantz, of Salt Lake City, and his twin brother, Thomas (Donna) Schantz, of Valdez; his beloved life partner, T.J. Epps, of Anchorage; and his grandfather, Thomas M. Sullivan, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carleton and Darleen Schantz; maternal grandmother, Helen B. Sullivan; and a cousin, Cathy Schantz.
Memorials may be given to the Tim Schantz Memorial Scholarship Fund at Union State Bank, 210 W. Court, Winterset, Iowa. The memorial scholarship will be used to established an annual scholarship for a young aspiring ornithologist.

A funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset, Iowa. Pastor Jim Howland will officiate. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with a sharing of memories service at 7 p.m. Cremation will immediately follow the funeral and a memorial service will be scheduled in Anchorage later this month.
Mr. Schantz was born on Oct. 30, 1964, in Rock Island, Ill., the son of Dean and Kathryn "Kit" (Kearney) Schantz.

A well-known "birder," he was quoted in a Daily News story about a rare bullfinch sighting earlier this year in Fairbanks.
"I flew up Tuesday, ... but I missed the bird. So I came back. Then I heard the bird was seen Wednesday. I was just sick. I went to my boss and said, 'There's this bullfinch up in Fairbanks.' He let me take the time off.
"Then the earthquake hit and I thought, 'Oh my God, this flight's not going to go.' So I canceled the ticket, rented a car and drove all night. I was there at sunrise Thursday and saw the bird."
Survivors include his parents, Dean and Kathryn "Kit" Schantz of Winterset; two brothers, Michael Schantz and his wife, Terri, of Salt Lake City; his twin brother, Thomas Schantz and his wife, Donna, of Valdez; life partner, T.J.
