Obituary

Mary Catharine Johnson was born June 4, 1829, in Lawrence county, Indiana, and departed this life Jan. 2, 1909, at Winterset, Ia., aged 79 years, 6 months and 28 days.

She was married April 1, 1852, to George T. Nichols and in the fall of that year they removed to Iowa county, Iowa, where they lived until the spring of 1854 when they again removed to Madison county, Iowa, and settled on a farm in what afterwards became known as the Worthington neighborhood, where they lived until the death of father Nichols which occurred March 3, 1888. Mother Nichols continued to live on the old homestead for some ten or twelve years after the death of her husband, finally selling the old home and from that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lucy M. Vance, in Winterset, but making frequent visits to her other children.

Six children were born to her, the three older of which, Mrs. Alice C. Thomson, Wm. W. Nichols and Cora Nichols preceded her to the land of eternal rest. The three younger, Mrs. Lucy M. Vance, of Winterset, C. L. Nichols, of Palisade, Colo., and E. V. Nichols, of Earlham, being present at the funeral. In addition to these they adopted and raised two grandchildren, children of Mrs. Alice C. Thomson, one of whom, Mrs. Bessie Hatfield being present at the funeral. The other, Mrs. Blanche Hays, of Hope, Kan., being prevented by sickness from attending.

Mother Nichols also leaves a brother, J. W. Johnson, of Des Moines, and two sisters, Mrs. M. N. Jellison and Mrs. Nancy Gilliland, of Winterset, besides a large circle of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Mother Nichols joined the Methodist church at an early age and continued a consistent member of the same during a long and useful life, she and her husband having been pioneers both in the church and in the building of this part of our state.
