Death of J. K. Gattenby

J. K. Gattenby, one of the long time residents of Grand River township and one of that townships most highly respected citizens died yesterday,

Mr. Gattenby was born nearly 86 years ago in Indiana. He came to Grand River township in 1880 and until his retirement on account of advancing years, was engaged in farming.

He enlisted in the war of the Rebellion when 17 years of age and saw active service until the close of the war.

Of recent years he had resided in Macksburg, his son, H. E. Gattenby, having management of the farm.

J. K. Gattenby

Mr. J. K Gattenby was born in Moores Hill, Indiana on October 25, 1848, and passed to his future home on August 25, 1926, at the age of 78 years and 10 months.

In 1865 he enlisted at Columbus, Indiana, in Company G, One Hundred and Forty Fifth Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After serving one year, he returned and was mustered out at Indianapolis.

In 1871 Mr. Gattenby married Miss Grace Young, with whom he came by covered wagon to Iowa in 1876. After spending five years in Webster county, they removed to Madison county where he has since made his home.

To this union, four children were born, Henry E. Gattenby and Mrs. Nellie Rowe of Macksburg, Mrs. Lenny Corey of Mount Union, Iowa. Of his immediate family all survived him except Daisy, a daughter who passed away in 1903 at Ashland, Oregon, and his wife, who died March 25, 1925.

Fraternally, Mr. Gattenby was connected with the Grand River Lodge No. 406, I. O. O. F. In this order he held membership since 1877, and gained honors for perfect membership. He also wore the bronze button which gave evidence of his membership in the Grand Army of the Republic.

Mr. Gattenby at all times lived up to high standards of citizenship and was justly esteemed in Macksburg and vicinity, where he was well known and had many warm friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church in Macksburg, Rev. L. H. Athey officiating. The I. O. O. F. Relief Corps and world war soldiers assisted in the services. Interment in the Macksburg cemetery.
