Page 1Death of Mrs. Betts
Mrs. Joseph Betts, one of the old settlers of the county, died of paralysis last Friday at 10:00 a.m., after an illness of seven weeks. During the last four weeks she was practically unconscious and loving relatives and friends watched by her bedside with a hope that they knew could never be realized, and on Thursday last she passed into a peaceful sleep from which she never awakened. The deceased was well known and highly respected, having led an active business life for the past thirty years in the millinery and dressmaking business. But in all her business career she has never deserted her home duties. She was a kind and loving wife, a devoted mother and was dearly beloved by all who knew her. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the friends and neighbors.
Emily Jane Ergenbright was born in Bertholomew county, Ind. April 17, 1845 and died at her home in Winterset Sept. 11, 1908, aged 63 years, 4 months and 24 days.
She came with her parents to Iowa in 1859 and settled in Marion county and removed to Madison county in 1865.
She was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Betts Oct. 15, 1863. To them one daughter was born, Minnie, now Mrs. Harry Holbrook. They moved to Winterset in 1872 and have since made this place their home. She united with the Church of Christ at St. Charles in early womanhood but had never transferred her letter to this city. She leaves her husband and daughter, three brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss. All of whom were present at the funeral except one sister in Kansas who was unable to attend on account of sickness.
The funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon at three o’clock conducted by Rev. Atwood. Interment took place in the Rock City cemetery.
