Capt. Samuel S. Guiberson, one of the old residents of Winterset, died last Friday at the Soldiers’ Home in Marshalltown, after an illness of about a year. Mr. Guiberson had been suffering for some months without making any advancement towards recovery, and he conceived the notion that if he were taken to the hospital at Marshalltown, he would get better. In order to do all that was possible for him and to grant his wish, the family consented and a few weeks ago he was taken to Marshalltown but to no avail.
Samuel S. Guiberson was born April 4, 1835, and came with the family to Madison county in early pioneer times. He enlisted in Company A of the 39th Iowa infantry August 8, 1862, was made a corporal, afterwards promoted to a lieutenancy and still later made captain of the company.
Feb. 22, 1861, he married Miss Martha Ratliff. To them was born five children, two of them are dead. The three living ones are Mrs. Green, of Des Moines, Mrs. Fend, of Oklahoma, and George R., of Winterset.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. ReQua, of the M. E. church.
