A Promising Life Ended

Surprise and sadness were occasioned Saturday, when news reached Winterset of Raymond Whedon's death. He was born and raised in Winterset and was everybody's favorite.

Some four years ago he received the appointment of chief clerk of the quartermaster's department of the southern branch of the National Soldier's home in Hampton, Virginia, which place he has satisfactorily filled ever since. Our understanding in that the only time he left his post of duty was last summer, when he spent his vacation in this city.

Had he lived three days longer, he would have been thirty-five years old, yesterday being his birth day.

The body arrived at this place Tuesday and funeral services were held at the Whedon home yesterday. The Grand Army Woman's Relief Corps. and Masons were in attendance. Services were conducted by Rev. J. S. Corkey.

Raymond Whedon Dead

Raymond Whedon, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Win Whedon, died of stomach trouble at Hampton, Virginia. The day before his death Mrs. Whedon received a telegram from the Commandant of the post that Raymond was very sick. In reply to Mrs. Whedon‘s telegram asking if she should come another telegram told her that she would be notified if his condition became dangerous. In a few hours another telegram announced he was dead.

Raymond had been suffering from stomach trouble for a long time. He was not very strong but his condition was not considered serious by major Hughes, Commandant of the important post of Hampton Roads, whose private secretary Raymond had been for several years.

The body reached Winterset Wednesday morning and the funeral occurred that afternoon with Masonic and military honors.

Raymond Whedon was thirty-four years old and was born in Winterset. He was a fine young man and was the friend of everyone in the town. He entered the Spanish-American war and was quickly promoted to a position in the quartermaster’s department. Almost all the time since the war he has been connected with the Army has Major Hughes’ secretary.
