Sarah Ellen Brittain, daughter of Joseph and Mary Brittain, was born in Madison county, Iowa, Nov. 19, 1851. The same year her father and mother came to this county from Kansas.
Accept for about 10 years she had a continuous residence in Madison county and for forty-six years she lived in Winterset. In 1870 she united in marriage with Benton Nicholson. Her husband died January 12, 1899.
She was a faithful member of the Baptist church in Winterset for many years and continued loyal to the church to the time of her death.
She was a mother of six children, four of whom survive her, Ada, now Mrs. J. W. Bunker, Claude and Lyle who reside in Winterset and Joseph who resides in Tacoma, Washington. Emory and Odin preceded her in death some years ago. She has three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Nicholson loved her family, her friends and her home. She was loyal to her country and took great pride in having six brothers in the Union army. She was the last surviving member of a large family. She died in the confident hope of receiving the reward of the just.
She leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her departure. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon, Nov. 29, 1925, with a sermon by Rev. LeRoy Cooley. Interment was McDonald cemetery in Jefferson township.

Pg 1Mrs. Sarah E. Nicholson passed away at her home on west Jefferson street early Saturday morning at the age of 74. She was one of the early pioneers of the county, having been born in Jefferson township this county, November 19, 1851. Thus she had resided continuously in this county except during a period of ten years at Perry, Kansas. Mrs. Nicholson had resided here in Winterset since 1888, her husband, Burton Nicholson preceeding her in death in the year 1899. She was the last survivor of a large family of children. Six of her brothers served in the Union Army and two of them died as the result of their service to their country.
She was a woman unusually devoted to her home and her children and one whose daily life was a consistent example of her Christian faith.
