Psge 3Death of Mrs. Evans
Mrs. Mary Jordan Evans died at her home in this city last Tuesday morning at 6:45 after an illness of less than one week. About three weeks ago Mrs. Evans stepped on a nail which pierced her shoe and entered her foot to the depth of about a quarter of an inch. The sore healed up and nothing was thought of it until a week or ten days later when it began to get sore and rapidly grew worse, resulting in tetanus from which the sufferer died in a few days.
Mrs. Evans was born near Cincinnati July 7th, 1840. With her parents she moved to Iowa City and remained there from 1855 to 1858 inclusive and it was there she married F. H. Evans, who survives her. To this union were born six children, three of whom died in infancy. The three surviving children are Mrs. Anna Hulbert, Mrs. Grace Walkup and Miss Carrie Evans. She had two step-children, a son and daughter of Mr. Evans by a former marriage whom she always claimed as her own and loved as such, Charles M. Evans and Mrs. Maggie Granthune, both now living in Indiana.
Mrs. Evans was an active member of the W.R.C., and was for a long time chaplin of the corps at this place, and at the time of her death, was a delegate to the state convention of the W.R.C. which meets at Mason City next month. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Presbyterian church at this place and was always an active participant in the church work. She was a most estimable lady and greatly loved by all who knew her. The sorrowing family, although unable to be comforted in their loss, have the deepest sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
The funeral services were held at the house yesterday at 2:30 o’clock and were conducted by the deceased’s pastor, Rev. R. R. Marquis.
