RALPH AMY Crushed To Death By Wheels

Ralph Amy Killed in Dexter. His team frightened at in-coming train – throws him under wheels.
Death comes 12 hours later. Son of John Amy, Veteran of Civil War, and Grandson of “Old Amy” Stage Driver.

Ralph Amy, a nineteen year old son of John Amy, who died in Jackson township two years ago, was killed by a team of frightened horses in Dexter, Saturday, December 16, 1906.

Amy was a bright young man and worked for Charles Wick of Jackson township. As is the usual neighborhood custom, Mr. Wicks sent young Amy to help his neighbor, Emory Bond, haul hogs to market in Dexter Saturday. Amy arrived in Dexter in the morning, unloaded his hogs, got his dinner and after eating loaded up some coal for Mr. Wicks.

Just as he left the coal yard a train from the east came roaring through Dexter. The team was frightened and Amy, who was a good horseman, jumped from the wagon to hold them. A lunge of the horses threw Amy under their hoofs and when the frightened horses broke into a run their hoofs struck him in the face. The front wheel passed over his head crushing his skull into a pulp, and the hind wheel cut a groove in his body. Men at the coal yard picked up the unconscious boy. The accident occurred just after dinner. The boy died at eleven o'clock without regaining consciousness.

The funeral occurred at Early Chapel Monday morning. Amy was a son of John Amy, a veteran of the Civil War, and a grandson of “Old Amy” the stage driver, a well known figure on the streets of Winterset since 1855.

Note: Burial was at Stringtown cemetery.
