JACKIE STEPHENSON-CAREY, Winterset

Jaquelynn Jaynne Stephenson-Carey, 83, of Winterset died Dec. 6, 2009, at her home.

A visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 9) at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6–8 p.m. Following the visitation, cremation will take place. There will be no services. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Peru Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Peru United Methodist Church. Jackie Stephenson-Carey was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Madison County to F. Glenn and Mary (Miller) Black. She attended country school at Scott Center and attended high school in Winterset, graduating in the class of 1944. Jackie was married to John Stephenson and then later to Charles Carey. They both preceded her in death. Before she had children, Jackie worked as a CNA at the Madison County Hospital, and once she began raising her family, she remained home as a mother and farmwife. Jackie was a member of the Peru United Methodist Church, where she was active over the years in many activities, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Peru Chit Chat Club. She also was involved with the Democratic Party, volunteering at voting precincts, and was a girls’ 4-H leader for Walnut Township.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, John Stephenson and Charles Carey, and one brother, Chancey Black.

She is survived by her nine children — Gayle Kibbe of Peru, Lorna Stephenson of Pleasant Hill, Utonda “Toni” Waltz, Gene Stephenson and Wade Porter, all of Winterset, Beth Lenz of North Sioux City, S.D., Ryan Stephenson and Shana Smith, both of Osceola, and Eric Stephenson of Truro; a sister, Rosemary Burkhead of Missouri; and 27 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
