Henry Gutshall was born in Harrison county, Ohio, May 8th, 1834 and died at his home in Jefferson township August 30th, 1906, being 72 years old.
He grew to manhood near the place of his birth and came to Iowa with his parents in 1855. He lived for a short time in Des Moines and then came to the present home place in Jefferson township, where he lived for fifty years.
He was married March 25th, 1866, to Lucinda Parks. To them were born seven children, five daughters and two sons. The living children are Mary E. Trindle, of Sumner, Nebraska; Sarah J. Pyers, of Norwalk; Jessie A. Freeborn, of Earlham; George W. Gutshall, of Winterset; Lovilla J. Freeborn, of Van Meter, and Margaret M. Couch, of Lisbon, North Dakota.
Mr. Gutshall's health had been poor for many years and early last spring he seemed unusually poorly. In June it became apparent that death was preying upon his vitals and in about ten weeks after death came and relieved his sufferings. He loved life and would have been glad to remain here longer with the loved ones, but he expressed his resignation to God's will that he was ready to go. Besides his wife and faithful companion of forty years and the children, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Catharine Manbeck, of Van Meter, and Mrs. Samuel Cutshall, of Jefferson township, and very many other kindred and friends. He was highly respected in his home neighborhood as a Christian citizen.
The funeral was conducted at Union chapel Sunday, September 2nd, 1906.
