Page 4, Column 4Wrongfully Jailed; Died From Effects
One of the saddest deaths that has come to our notice lately was that of James Mackreel, of St. Charles, who died at his home last week from the effects of disease contracted in the Des Moines jail where he had been incarcerated for a month without warrant or charge.
He was rounded up with a lot of vagrants about a month ago because he happened to be in that vicinity, and thrown in jail, where he was refused trial or release until his father finally discovered him. The police records did not contain his name, in fact the father twice called at the jail and was told there was no such person there. At last he asked the privilege of visiting the prisoners, and when he came to the bum cell there was his boy, sick, pale and haggard, held nearly a month without a trial or even papers against him, guilty of no crime. He was taken home but died within a few days.
