This community was startled yesterday afternoon by the report that H. B. Sumner, the noted local horse man, had died suddenly in Gaekle’s restaurant a little after four o’clock. Mr. Sumner entered the restaurant and sat down at a table as had been his habit, to get a lunch or a dish of ice cream, and as Mr. Gaekle approached him to ascertain his wants his head suddenly fell on the table and he began gasping. It was immediately seen that he was very seriously ill and while one ran for the doctor another stepped into his nephew’s store which is next door. He died in about five minutes without speaking. The cause of his death was heart failure. He complained the day before of not feeling well, but did not appear to consider it of a serious nature. His body was taken into the home of W. C. Sumner, at which place the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon.

Mr. Sumner was born in New York state, sixty-nine years ago where he lived until grown to manhood, when he moved to Illinois. He came to Winterset in 1882 where he has lived ever since. He had no family, having never been married. He was a brother to W. S. Sumner who lives on the west edge of town and the brother’s home he always considered his, although he boarded in town. He was a man of much force of character, active and industrious. He was thoroughly honest and trustworthy in all dealings and of good moral habits. His business was that of handling horses in which he excelled. He was known in this and adjoining counties as an expert in his business, and his judgment and opinion on horse matters was sought after generally. His sad and sudden demise is keenly felt by his friends, whose sympathy goes out to the brother and family.

H. B. Sumner Dies Suddenly

A very sudden death from heart failure occurred in Winterset about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, that of the well known horseman, H. R. Sumner. He had been out driving afternoon, and returning, went to Gaekle’s restaurant, presumably to get something to eat, and sat down to a table. Fred Gaekle went to see what he wanted and found him gasping for breath, and immediately fell forward on the table dead.

The body was removed to the home of his nephew, W. C. Sumner, the next door, and his brother W. S. Sumner, who lives just west of the city, sent for, and preparations made for the funeral.

Mr. Sumner was seventy years old and unmarried. He had lived in Winterset from fifteen to twenty years, and followed the business of horse trainer.

The funeral will be held at the residence of W. C. Sumner tomorrow at 2 o’clock p.m.
