Viola Mary Comer, 90, died Nov. 4, 2009, at her home in Pioneer Villa, Lone Tree, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Macksburg United Methodist Church. Interment at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola will take place at a later date.

Viola was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Madison County to Elmer and Mary (Allenbrand) Slaughter. She graduated from Lorimor High School and later that year, on Dec. 26, 1936, married Lawrence Leonard Comer. To this union were born four children — Myrna, Ardis, Kyle and Vonn. Viola received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Drake University in Des Moines in 1961. She did graduate work in psychology before moving to Arkansas with her retired husband, who passed away in 1978. While in Arkansas, Viola met and married her second husband, Herman Sybrandt. She moved back to Lone Tree in 1996. Viola was a public school teacher, teaching in rural schools in the Martensdale area, as well as Patterson, Indianola, Hartford and Knoxville, Iowa. She also was a city clerk for West Des Moines and a postal clerk in Beaver, Ark.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, Lawrence Comer and Herman Sybrandt; a son, Vonn Comer; two stepsons, Robert and James Sybrandt; and a brother, Ian Slaughter.

She is survived by three children — Myrna Maurer of Tahlequah, Okla., Ardis Myers and husband Loren of Macksburg, Iowa, and Kyle Comer and wife Sharon of Lone Tree, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Dee Sybrandt of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; as well as 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
