CATHARINE HARTLEY

Catharine Commons was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, May 24th, 1832 and died at her home in Winterset, Iowa May 3rd, 1906.

She emigrated to New York in 1848, then to Illinois in 1853. She was married in Peoria in 1854 to Edmond Hartley. Moved that same year to Davenport then to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1865, and in 1860 moved to Madison county, Iowa, where she has since resided, living nine miles southwest of Winterset until last October when she moved to Winterset.

Fourteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hartley, nine of whom survive her, Mrs. James Doud, of Greenfield; Mrs. J. E. Carney, of Sterling, Colorado; Mrs. Charles Schular, of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Mrs. John Nolan, E.D., Thomas, Martin, Katie and Agnes Hartley of this place, also fifteen grandchildren.

She was baptised a Catholic in infancy and served her God. She reared her family in the fear and love of God. She was hard working, honest, kind hearted, true, faithful and charitable, and these virtues she strove to inculate in her children. Always cheerful, despite trials and disappointments, always seeking her God in prayer during all troubles, she died as she had always prayed to, surrounded by the comforts of her faith. Although those left after her will mourn and miss her, they will feel she was their inspiration to a better, nobler life and will prepare to meet her.

Services were conducted by Father Feeley at the Catholic church Sunday, May 6th, at 8 a.m. and the interment took place at St. Patrick's cemetery.
