ALICE MARIE HAZEN, Winterset

Alice M. Hazen died at Bright Kavanagh Hospice on Easton Blvd in Des Moines Tuesday November 3, 2009.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday November 7, 2009 at Van Meter United Methodist Church, with burial in the Booneville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday November 6, at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Alice Marie Hazen was born April 13, 1912 on a farm South of Van Meter, Iowa. She was the daughter of A.C. and Anna (Forret) Smith. She attended school in Van Meter, graduating in the class of 1929. She was married to Robert Hazen September 24, 1938. She was a homemaker and lived in the Van Meter vicinity on a farm until 1992 when Bob’s health failed and they moved to Winterset. She was a 4-H leader, Farm Bureau member and a member of the Van Meter Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, four sisters: Louise, Agnes Loose, Irene Kelly and Hazel Stewart; two brothers Alfred and Robert Smith and an infant granddaughter.

She is survived by her daughter Phyllis Thomas (Ronald), three grandchildren: Susan Searcy (Shane); Terry Schofield (Daryl); Jon Thomas (Kelli) and eight great- grandchildren; sister Mary Ann Dawson (Eddie) of Dallas Center, sister Margaret Olson of Waukee, and many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed music, basketball and gardening.

Memorials may be directed to the Middle River Hospice of Winterset, IA.

ALICE HAZEN, Winterset

Alice Marie Hazen, 97, of Winterset died Nov. 3, 2009, in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Van Meter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Stueve and Pastor John Shaull officiating. Burial was at Booneville Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice of Winterset. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Redfield and Earlham.

Alice Hazen was born April 13, 1912, in rural Van Meter to A.C. and Anna (Forret) Smith. She attended school in Van Meter, graduating in 1929. Her marriage to Robert Hazen took place Sept. 24, 1938. Alice, a homemaker, was the bookkeeper for their rural Van Meter farm until 1992, when she and her husband moved to Winterset. She was a 4-H leader, Farm Bureau member and a member of the Van Meter Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four sisters, Louise Smith, Agnes Loose, Irene Kelly and Hazel Stewart; two brothers, Alfred and Robert Smith; and an infant granddaughter.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Thomas; two sisters, Mary Ann Dawson of Dallas Center and Margaret Olson of Waukee; and three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
