Gordon Leroy Wilson was born Feb. 14, 1910, in Montgomery County near Elliott, Iowa, the son of Minnie Elizabeth Copeland and Job Scott Wilson.
Gordon and his family moved to a farm south of Winterset in Madison County, Iowa, in 1918 where he received his early religious training at Ord Church and attended Yale School in Madison County.
He married Junietta Agnes Rogers on Sept. 26, 1934, in Creston, Iowa.
Gordon was a man of the soil and loved farming and the outdoors. He farmed in Adair County for 24 years before retiring in 1974 to live in Winterset. Soon after, he began work for the city of Winterset where he remained for 14 years until retiring a second time.
His hobbies included woodworking and making old time wagons for his family. He was an avid reader and was always ready for a good Zane Grey western. Coffee at Rudy’s Restaurant with his friends was one of his favorite activities. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as a true gentleman with a delightful sense of humor.
Preceding him in death were: his wife, Junie; his parents; sisters, Flora, Mattie, Maude, Lera, Dora, Essie, Madge, Martha, Cora and Lois; brothers, Scott, Ted and Russell; and grandchildren, Michelle and Barry Kelleher.
He is survived by five daughters, Lois Kelleher and husband Paul of Grand Junction, Colo., Marilyn Dolan and husband Don of Greenfield, Iowa, Janice Kirkland and husband Dennis of Creston, Iowa, Martha Raper and husband Doug of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Jo Achee and husband Leroy of Livonia, La., and daughter No. 6, niece Linda Forbes of Petersburg, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kathleen Whatley and husband Chuck of Riverside, Calif.; nieces; nephews; and friends.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with burial in the Winterset Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be directed to the Macksburg United Methodist Church in Macksburg, Iowa.
