Henry Lucas, son of W. G. Lucas, was born in Madison county, Iowa on October 30, 1858 and grew to manhood on his father’s farm just northwest of Winterset. He was married in December 1896 to Neva E. Guiberson, of Union township, who with one child three years old, are left to mourn the loss of a husband and father. In the spring of 1901 he had a severe attack of appendicitis from which he rallied and gave promise of permanent recovery. In the spring of 1902 he had a second attack which soon developed into an abscess on the liver. This was temporarily relieved by an operation which was performed on July 14th, and for a few hours seemed entirely successful but on Tuesday evening, July 15th he grew weaker and passed away at 9:30 a.m. July 16th. He realized several hours before the end that death was near and never lost consciousness until a short time before his death.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
