Winterset Madisonian – July 31, 1902
Pg 1

Winterset has lost by the hand of death one of its noblest citizens, Mr. James Murray whose home has been here for thirty years. He was a blacksmith by trade, and was a highminded, Christian man. For many years he held the office of elder in the Presbyterian church. He and his wife, who survives him, were highly esteemed by the best society of the city. Their only child, Fred Murray, died several years ago. For several years Mr. Murray’s health has been failing, but he kept at work long after most men would have given up and quit. Last December he and Mrs. Murray went for an extended visit at the home of Mrs. Murray’s sister, Mrs. S. D. Smith of Ft. Madison. For a time he improved but soon began to decline again. The end came at 8:30 p.m. July 21st. The funeral service was held at the residence of Mrs. Smith, Tuesday evening the 22d, conducted by Rev. Geo. D. Stewart, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The remains were brought to Winterset for burial, accompanied by his wife, her brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs. Smith and by two other sisters Mrs. Hobb, and Mrs. ----- of St. Louis. The services here were conducted by Rev. P. H. McDowell, of the Baptist church Thursday from the residence.

Mr. Murray was born in Center county, Pa., in 1829. He lived a few years at Ft. Madison before removing to Winterset.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
