Winterset Madisonian – April 3, 1902
Pg 8
St. Charles

A number of Masons and G. A. R. comrades from St. Charles attended the funeral of Mr. James Gettys, late of the 40th Iowa Infantry, which occurred at Blair Chapel cemetery on Monday a.m. The deceased died of heart failure on the night of March 28th. He was a man of excellent repute, a member in good standing in Model lodge, A.F. & A.M., and John Miller Post G.A.R. at St. Charles. Although just past the age sixty-five his health had been remarkably good, except an attack of la grippe, beginning about two weeks ago, and from which he had, to appearance, entirely recovered. Retiring at ten o’clock in excellent spirits and supposed good health, he was discovered to be dying at midnight.
