Word came from Mabel M. Leonard to J. F. Leonard that her mother died on Friday, February 7th at Denver, and that she and the body would be here on Saturday night’s train. Mrs. Leonard, modest and retiring as ever, had made special orders as to her funeral, which were observed as far as possible. Thompson Kinkade of Omaha, brother of Mrs. Leonard and Mrs. Mory of Chicago, sister, came with Mabel. The remains were taken to the residence of J. F. Leonard, from which, after brief service by Dr. J. R. Murphy of Des Moines, at 9:30 a.m. Sabbath morning, the body was laid beside that of her husband who died November 6, 1879, twenty-two years ago.

She was born near Washington, Iowa, and came here with her father’s family and settled in Jefferson township and later came to Winterset. She was married to Byram Leonard, son of the late Judge Leonard, May 30, 1874. On the death of her parents, troubled with tuberculosis, she moved to Denver, Colorado, for the benefit of her health, where she made her home until she reached the end of life’s journey.

She seemed to live in and for her daughter Mabel M. who graduated from the Denver high school in the class of 1895, and later entered the Michigan University and there prosecuted her studies for four years. Last fall Mrs. Leonard and her daughter made a trip to California, visiting the usual points of interest, but the climate not agreeing with the mother, they returned about the 1st of this month to Denver. Mrs. Leonard was carried into her home on a cot where she drew her last breath on the 7th inst. Her life was heroic in the extreme. Her will power fought down all opposition. She filled a large place in the hearts of those fortunate enough to form her acquaintance. These and the church of choice will long mourn her absence.
