JOHN EDWARDS, Winterset

John W. “Johnny Bill” Edwards, 80, of Winterset and formerly of Lorimor, died Sept. 23, 2009, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 28, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Lorimor Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Edwards family.

John Edwards was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Union County to Thomas Brian and Lillian Beatrice (Tilton) Edwards and was a graduate of Lorimor High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict where he fought on Heartbreak Ridge. John was wounded four times and received two Purple Hearts.

His marriage to Roberta June Miller took place in September of 1954. Roberta preceded him in death in September of 1978. John later married Clara Spyres on June 3, 1979, in Thayer.

John’s career included working as a service engineer for Lenox Industries in Des Moines for many years, owning L & E Plumbing as well as J & R Grain Dryer Sales and Service, both in Lorimor, farming and working as a mail clerk out of the Creston Post Office, from which he retired in 1995.

He was very active in the Lorimor community, serving as mayor for eight years and president of the Lorimor Community Development Committee, He was a member of the American Legion Post, V.F.W. Post, Lions Club and Masonic Lodge, all of Lorimor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Roberta; two sons, Thomas Edwards and Charles Marts; a brother, Tommy Edwards; a sister, Maurine “Mandy” Jones; and a granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife, Clara, of Winterset; his children — Karla Goodwin of Villisca, Debra Eggman of Prescott, John T. Edwards and Sarah Edwards, both of Lorimor, and Pamela Oshel of Corning; three siblings, Donna Vert of Des Moines, Jean Sheffer of Indianola and Sara Edwards of Osceola; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
