Obituary

Leroy B. Coe, son of William A. and Nancy D. Coe, was born May 8, 1844, in Mt. Carmel, Ind., and died at his home in Fairview July 18, 1901; aged 57 years, 2 months and 10 days.

With his parents the deceased came to Scott county, Iowa, in 1847. In the spring of 1854, the father moved into this community, and a few months later to the place where the deceased passed away. On this farm Leroy spent most of his life. November 14, 1867, he married Ella R. Streeter, of Brighten, Iowa. After their marriage they at once began housekeeping in the very house where he died. At various times they have lived in DeSoto, Brighten, Winterset and Fairview. To them were born seven children—three girls and four boys. The two oldest died in infancy. The third, Alson, died a little more than two years ago. And now that the father has gone, the home is broken and will never be as it once was. The ties of earth are severed only to be reunited in the world to come. As a husband Mr. Coe was devoted to his wife, was loyal to her, seeking her welfare and happiness throughout his whole life. During all his sickness no one could care for him as did she. He wanted her with him all the while. She was constantly with him during the long months of his sickness and terrible suffering. As a father none could be more loving than he. For their children he lived and labored. He sought to give them the advantages of which he had been deprived. He was pleased to see them growing into usefulness in society, and honored by all. No deprivations were too great for him if only it would add one jot to the happiness of his family. His home was very dear to him. He loved it and loved to throw wide open its doors to his hosts of friends. As a Christian Brother Coe was an honored and faithful member of the Methodist church, having been baptized by Rev. Welborn during the latter’s pastorate here in Fairview. Of this local church he was a member until his death. He was a true and tried Christian, honoring his profession by a Godly walk and consistent life. He was not so much a talker as a doer. He lived his Christianity. To him the church committed many a trust, knowing he would give it his own careful attention. He has passed out of the church on earth, but only to be gathered unto his father and his Lord in the glorious resurrection morn. As a citizen, in every place he lived, he was recognized as a man of strict integrity, of honest purpose, in whom the greatest confidence was always placed.

The deceased had for months prior to his death been a great sufferer. Two years ago he was successfully treated for a cancerous growth on the lip. One year ago a similar growth made its appearance on the lower right side of the face. The same treatment was used for five months, then other physicians and surgeons of national fame were consulted and their verdict was “too late.” He was brought to his home again in June, and here he lingered for a few days, struggling hopelessly for life. The end came July 18, and though dead, it is only as man sees it, for God says, “He that liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”

The family have the sympathy of the entire community and of hosts of friends in other places. A man of God has fallen, but though dead, he still speaks by his righteous, holy life.
