Obituary

Sarah Watts Jones was born in Holmes county, Ohio, July 5, 1848; died at Mercy hospital in Des Moines January 12, 1901. She was united in marriage with Basel Jones March 17, 1870. They moved from Ohio to Madison county, Iowa, in 1883, where they have resided until the present time.

She united with the Church of Christ in 1872, of which she remained a loyal, devoted, and energetic member.

Although in ill health during the past year, her condition did not become alarming until December, when her disease assumed a serious form, and on January 7, in company with her husband, her daughter, Laura, and Dr. F. W. Bush, she went to Des Moines to consult the best physician in that city. An exploratory examination revealed that her suffering was due to a cancerous growth, and medical skill proved inadequate, except to relieve the suffering in a great measure. All that love and devotion could prompt was done to make her last days pleasant, and on the evening of January 12, she entered into the rest that remaineth for the people of God.

She leaves to mourn her absence a husband, five sons, three daughters, one grandchild, an aged mother, brothers, sisters and a host of friends throughout the community in which she lived. She expressed a wish to live for the sake of her loved ones, if it was God’s will, if it was not, she was ready and willing to bow in humble submission to the will of Him whom she had served so faithfully, and to whom she led each of her children. How grand a mission was hers and how nobly fulfilled. Truly, it may be said of this much loved woman, “She hath done what she could.”

The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, January 15, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. Roberts, of Des Moines. Many beautiful flowers were placed upon the casket by loving hands.

Thus is made a vacant chair in this loved and loving home circle, and one more treasure in heaven to lead us upward. Mother is not far removed from us; she has but passed through the valley and shadow and up the mountain heights to God in the enjoyment of sweet peace, the gift of God’s love.
