Fred L. Smith, age 65, of St. Charles passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at the St. Charles Parish, St. Charles, Iowa. Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 6, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. Burial was at St. Charles Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. Charles Parish or Hope Ministries, Box 862, Des Moines, IA 50304-0862.
Fredrick L. Smith was born May 2, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Bruce and Ruby (Alexander) Smith. He was a 1962 graduate of Interstate 35 High School and later served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1968, with a tour of duty in Vietnam. He later attended college at Grand View and Drake University, receiving a degree in finance. Fred was united in marriage to Sandra Howard on June 7, 1969, in St. Charles and to this union three children were born.
During his working career, Fred worked as an insurance auditor for USF & G Insurance Company, which later became St. Paul Travelers Insurance.
Fred was a member of the St. Charles Parish and served as the church treasurer and board chairperson. He also was a member of the Winterset Sportsman’s Club of which he was the treasurer for many years. He also served on the district committee for project and construction for the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fly fishing and was very creative in making flies. Fred also was passionate at sporting clays and enjoyed setting up his five-stand shoots across Iowa, which he organized every year as a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society. He also enjoyed motorcycles, especially his newly purchased Harley.
Fred is survived by his wife, Sandra Smith of St. Charles; his children — Brad Smith of Denver, Colo., Ryan Smith (Helen) of West Des Moines, and Sara Woodard (Jeff) of Des Moines; four siblings — Charles Smith (Fernette) of Marshalltown, Joan Files (Glen) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Vera Albright of Winterset, and David Smith (Bonnie) of New Virginia; his sister-in-law, Shelley Whitmore of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren — Hannah Marie Smith, Baby Woodard expected in March, Marissa and Amanda, and three “adopted” grandchildren — Mitchell, Abigail, and Emma Whitmore, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Richard and LaMarian Howard.
