St. Charles

Miss Elizabeth, daughter of George and Mary Hartman, was born in Indiana March 1, 1831; married David Downs in same place November 12, 1848. This couple, with other members of the family, came to Madison county, Iowa, in 1851 and settled on the land they have converted into an excellent and valuable farm and home, adjoining St. Charles, where in 1901, within the short space of less than five months, they both laid down the cares, duties, enjoyments and perfect work of well spent lives, more than 53 years of which were enjoyed as husband and wife. Their industry and good management provided a competence for their declining years.

Seven sons and three daughters survive these parents. All except one daughter (Mrs. Lot Hollingsworth, of Kearney, Neb.) reside here on or near the old home, and were present at the death and funeral of their excellent mother. Grandma Downs, during life, was a dutiful daughter, a faithful wife, kind mother, exemplary Christian, true friend and obliging neighbor, ever ready and willing to lend a strong and helping hand in the hour of need and distress. The last eight months of her life was fraught with intense suffering, having been stricken with paralysis, rendering her entirely helpless.

Funeral occurred August 29 from her late residence with services in the Church of Christ in St. Charles, of which she had for many years been a worthy and consistent member. Rev. Wright, of Knoxville, a pastor of that denomination, conducted the exercises. She was the first of the old settlers to pass away since the reunion of 1901.

Note: Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
