Phillip Garst died at the residence of his son, John Garst, Monday afternoon. Mr. Garst has been a resident of Iowa for over forty years, living in this community most of the time. He has lived to the ripe old age of ninety years, and has been a good citizen, every one respecting him to the uttermost.

When in his younger days he was rugged and hearty, not knowing what sickness was. Even the morning of his death he arose and ate a hearty breakfast. The past summer he has not been quite so well, being almost helpless, and was cared by his children.

He leaves six children and a large number of grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss.

Died, Phillip Gearst, in Truro, December 31, 1900, aged 91 years. Mr. Gearst was a pioneer settler, coming to Madison county in 1853. He was born in Virginia in 1810. He was an exceptionally strong and hearty man to near the last, hardly ever being sick.

He leaves four children, all married, and a goodly number of grandchildren. Several years ago his wife and three children preceded him to the “Bourne from which no traveler returns.” He left an inheritance of honor and uprightness of which his friends and children can well be proud.
