MAX ARNBURG, EARLHAM

Max Harry Arnburg, 85, of Earlham died Aug. 14, 2009, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Zane Raber and Linda Burnett officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery in rural Earlham, with military rites performed by Dexter American Legion Post 419.

Max Arnburg was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Guthrie County to Charles H. and Sarah (Isaac) Arnburg and attended country school in Adair and Guthrie County. On Dec. 12, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, serving until Nov. 6, 1945. He married Mickie Ferrie and the couple had five children — Gary, David, Larry, Terry, and Richard. Max later married Bonnie (Nellis) Atkins on Feb. 14, 1969, at the Earlham Friends Church. He and Bonnie purchased the Nellis farm where Max raised cattle for several years, after retiring from DMACC in Ankeny as a mechanical maintenance supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Earlham; one daughter, Terry Nervig of Ankeny; four sons, Gary Arnburg and Larry Arnburg, both of Earlham, David Arnburg of Northbrook, Ill., and Richard Arnburg of Maxwell; his stepchildren, Gwendolyn Applegate and Sharon Davis, both of Redfield, Tom Atkins of Johnston, and David Atkins of Des Moines; and 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

MAX HARRY ARNBURG, Earlham

Max H. Arnburg, age 85, died Friday August 14, 2009, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday. August 18, 2009. at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial and military rites at the Penn Center Cemetery near Earlham. Visitation will be Monday, August 17, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Max retired from DMACC as mechanical maintenance supervisor. Max and Bonnie purchased the Nellis farm near Earlham and he raised cattle for many years. Max enjoyed going fishing in Minnesota and enjoyed a good card game, but most of all loved to spend time with his family.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include the love of his life and wife, Bonnie Arnburg of Earlham; his children, Gary (Sheri) Arnburg of Earlham, David (Canda) Arnburg of Northbrook, IL, Larry (Patti) Arnburg of Earlham, Terry Nervig of Ankeny, and Richard (Gayle) Arnburg of Maxwell; his stepchildren, Gwendolyn (Randy) Applegate and Sharon (Monty) Davis of Redfield, Tom (Bev) Atkins of Johnston, and David (Debra) Atkins of Des Moines. Max was also survived by 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Sarah (Isaac) Arnburg; sisters, Pearl Arnburg; Esther Larson, Ruth Shaefer, Vera Hoff, and Lois Plowman; as well as brothers, Fred, Oberlin, Roy, and Raymond Arnburg. Memorials may be directed to the "Make A Wish Foundation" or your own favorite charity.
