Thursday, September 6, 1900Another old settler has gone to his long rest. On Tuesday evening as the shades of night were closing in the spirit of Uncle John Rhode took its flight to that bourne from which no traveler returns. His death was not unexpected as he had been in poor health for some time, but he had been confined to his bed only a short time. He was an upright citizen and a true friend, and many will sincerely mourn his taking away. For many years he made his home with his sister, Almedia Wroe, and it was in her home that he passed away.
In November, 1850, he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Salem, Iowa, and for fifty years he has consistently followed its tenets. It was his wish that the Masonic order should have full charge of his burial and in compliance therewith Madison Lodge No. 568, A.F. and A.M., will conduct the last sad rites this (Thursday) morning at ten o’clock from his late residence. Chaplain Rev. Best will preach the sermon.
John Rhode was born December 1st, 1823, in the state of Ohio. He was married to Catharine Pickard on the 27th of December, 1844. In 1854 he came to Iowa and settled in Keokuk county. He remained there but a short time when he moved to Henry county. He came to Earlham in 1878. He died September 4, 1900, aged seventy-six years, nine months and three days. Interment was in Earlham cemetery.
